Question: How much energy/electricity does lighting consume in the United States?
Answer: A 2007 DOE report estimated that outdoor lighting consumes over 178 TeraWatt-Hours annually, which is equivalent to the annual output of 25 nuclear power plants (1000 MW each) or 42 coal-burning plants (600 MW each). Approximately, 22 percent of all the electricity generated in the United States is used for lighting, and outdoor lighting represents about 20 percent of that total.
No fossil fuel = no green house gasses.
